Call for Participation
Santa Barbara, California May 14-16, 1998
Project Varenius of the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA) is seeking interested researchers to participate in a 3-day workshop to be held May 14-16, 1998, in Santa Barbara California on "Scale and Detail in the Cognition of Geographic Information". The workshop is being organized by Reginald G. Golledge and Daniel R. Montello of the Department of Geography, University of California at Santa Barbara. It is part of NCGIA's Project Varenius Research Area on "Cognitive Models of Geographic Space", overseen by a panel including David Mark (University at Buffalo, Chair), Christian Freksa (University of Hamburg), Stephen Hirtle (University of Pittsburgh), Robert Lloyd (University of South Carolina), and Barbara Tversky (Stanford University).
The purpose of the workshop is to identify and prioritize a research agenda for the topic. The structure of the meeting will be a combination of plenary sessions to identify and debate major issues and directions, and small-group discussions about more specific topics. Partial or full support for lodging and travel to the meeting may be available to participants.

Participation in the workshop will be limited to 25-35 people, and will be by invitation only. Proposals to participate in the workshop should consist of three parts:
