Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) are working meetings aimed at
contributing to the assessment of existing knowledge of a topic and
identifying directions for future research. ARW's should be co-directed
by a scientist from a Cooperation Partner (CP) country and a scientist
from a NATO country. An ARW is normally a meeting of two to five days'
duration, involving between 20 and 50 participants. ARWs are normally
held in CP countries, in the priority areas. Priority areas include
disarmament technologies, environmental security, high technology, and
science and technology policy. In the disarmament technologies area,
scientific questions arising from nuclear, biological, chemical and
conventional weapons disarmament and non-proliferation efforts are
studied. The aim is to examine science and technology which can
contribute to the pursuit of dismantlement, destruction and conversion
activities in an effective and environmentally sound manner. In the
environmental security area, scientific problems related to environmental
security including the reclamation of contaminated military sites,
regional environmental problems and natural and man-made disasters;
affordable cleanup technologies are of particular interest. In the high
technology area, scientific problems related to high technology include
information science, materials science, biotechnology, and energy
conservation and supply (non-nuclear). In the science and technology
policy area, problems related to science policy, technology transfer,
innovation, management, intellectual property rights and career mobility
(e.g. redeployment of defense-industry scientists) are of interest. In
dealing with these priority areas, computer networking should be used to
the fullest extent possible. Networking Infrastructure Grants are
available, to augment the regional computer networking infrastructure of
the academic community in CP countries. SUPPORT PROVIDED: The NATO grant
is intended to cover the organizational costs of the ARW, the travel and
living expenses of key speakers, and to contribute to the travel and
living expenses of the participants. The level of funding awarded to
organize an ARW is determined by NATO on a case-by-case basis.
APPLICATION INFORMATION: The above deadlines are for the Environmental
Security priority. For the priority area on high technology the NATO
Advisory Panel cannot consider applications for ARWs to be held less than
12 months after submission of the application. The other priority areas
have no set deadlines; applications received will be considered at the
following meeting of the relevant Advisory Panel. In addition to the Web
site listed above, NATO has a Gopher site at gopher://gopher.nato.int:70/
