The University Grants program seeks to improve the quality of higher
education by providing HP products to four-year colleges and universities
in support of their instructional mission consistent with HP's interests.
The University Grants focus is engineering and computer science, with
more specific areas of interest inelectrical and computer engineering;
computer science; mechanical engineering; and materials science. The
company encourages creative proposals that increase student usage of
state-of-the-art equipment for instructional purposes. HP is also
interested in proposals to strengthen teaching techniques or develop new
curriculum in areas of emerging technology. Evaluation of proposals will
focus on its originality, amount of student exposure, potential to
improve student performance and how applicants expect to achieve goals
stated in their proposals. The company also makes grants to/in: graduate
schools of management (areas of interest: management/business, finance,
marketing, information technology); chemical analysis (areas of interest:
chemistry, chemical engineering, bioengineering, bioscience,
environmental engineering); and medical education (areas of interest:
schools of medicine, schools of nursing, medical informatics). SUPPORT
PROVIDED: HP donates new equipment and software that is on the current HP
U.S. price list. Granted equipment has standard product warranty. HP does
not grant consumable supplies (e.g., paper and toner). Hardware
maintenance past product warranty is not included in grants. If HP
training or software-support products are requested they must be
justified in the proposal. Requests in excess of $500,000 are
discouraged. HP provides computers, printers, scanners and other
equipment for use in classroom instruction in graduate schools of
management. Medical and nursing schools may submit proposals requesting
HP products to be used in student training. APPLICANT INFORMATION: Four-
year colleges and universities in the United States, the District of
Columbia and Puerto Rico. Special consideration is given to: proposals
from schools where HP recruits students; schools located in areas where
HP has large concentrations of employees and business operations;
universities that encourage women and underrepresented minorities
(African American, Hispanic and Native American) to seek careers in
business, science and technology; proposals that involve collaboration
among and within educational organizations; and proposals showing
multiple relationships with HP. We seek innovative proposals that
integrate technology with teaching to focus on student learning and
establish high academic standards which include accountability measures
for student performance. The University Grants Board consists of employee
volunteers who represent HP's interests. They are responsible for
evaluating requests and making funding recommendations. APPLICATION
INFORMATION: A university must locate an HP employee willing to work with
it through all phases of the proposal and grant. This sponsor does not
have to be a graduate of the university, but should be someone who visits
the campus on an ongoing basis, primarily on business, such as for
recruiting, research, or serving on an advisory board. Proposals must be
sent to sponsor. HP does not accept proposals directly from universities.
