Grants in the education program are made to promote long-term
institutional development, reform, or renewal in the specific program
areas in higher education and elementary and secondary education. Some
programs are by invitation only, as noted below. Under its Higher
Education program, the Foundation accepts requests in five interest
areas: 1) Pluralism and Unity: concerns colleges and universities role in
fostering appreciation for both diversity and the common good in our
society (invitation only); 2) Liberal Arts Colleges: future challenges
and needs. Guidelines for this program will be available by request
December 1, 1996. 3) Improvement of General Education in Research
Universities; 4) Tools of Scholarship: grants are made to research
library "umbrella" organizations and similar collaborative entities that
improve scholarly communication through the cost-effective use of
technology; 5) United-States-Mexico Studies: grants are made to
strengthen comprehensive research on the varied relationships between
these countries (invitation only); 6) Historically Black Private Colleges
and Universities: grants are given for capital needs and faculty
development. Under the Elementary and Secondary Education program, grants
in the K-12 area are generally limited to California programs, with
primary emphasis on public schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. Areas
of interest are The Teaching Career, School Site and District Leadership,
and Educational Policy. Proposals of exceptional merit that do not fit
directly within the stated areas may be considered if they serve several
institutions or otherwise advance the Foundation's interests. APPLICANT
INFORMATION: Applicants are encouraged to submit a brief letter of
inquiry for review before preparing a complete proposal. The January 15
deadline is for proposals on Improvement of General Education in Research
Universities. The May 1 deadlines is for the Liberal Arts Colleges
interest area. The August 1 deadline is for institutional and consortia
applicants.
