The BellSouth Foundation awards grants throughout nine southeastern
states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi,
North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Improved learning is the
goal of the BellSouth Foundation and the heart of its current program.
Collaboration among places of learning is imperative: both vertically,
between preK-12 and high education, and horizontally, through new
networks of institutions, workplaces and communities. The Foundation has
identified three broad areas for support. 1) Developing Individual
Capacity to Improve learning: 1A) Promoting Capable Teachers: support the
induction of new teachers by helping school districts and others to
support and develop them as professionals. 1B) Developing Educators for
Leadership: seek leadership opportunities for school board members,
principals and teachers, and ensure that they are exposed to new ideas
and trained to make the best use of them. 2) Creating Environments to
Improve Learning: The objective is to encourage improvement in policy and
practice at learning institutions which will promote student access. 2A)
Rethinking Institutional Roles and Relationships: encourage collaborative
efforts at reform among preK-12 institutions, community colleges and
higher education; support projects to restructure and reorganize the
educational enterprise within preK-12 institutions. 2B) Encouraging
Community Involvement in Education Improvement: support programs that
encourage citizens to identify and express their perceptions of education
needs in their communities and to understand the important role that
education plays in all aspects of our lives; link community
organizations, museums, theaters and other cultural organizations with
homes and schools in order to encourage learning outside the classroom.
3) Promoting Partnerships Through Technology to Improve Learning: The
connecting power of information technology can maximize human potential.
The Foundation wishes to place technology at the service of teachers and
learners. 3A) Linking Schools with Other Learning Environments:
strengthen and increase efficiency and effectiveness of connections among
schools and educators and link schools with other community-based
organizations and homes. Open Grants are open to all applicants who have
reviewed these guidelines and feel that there is a reasonable match
between their organizations and our funding priorities. The first step in
applying for an Open Grant from the Foundation is to review the
guidelines thoroughly to determine if your organization's activities meet
the specific criteria outlined for one or more of the Foundation's focus
areas. If you feel there is a match, you are encouraged to discuss
proposal concepts with Foundation staff. Your proposal should not exceed
five pages in length; shorter proposals are welcome. The BellSouth
Foundation does not make grants for: capital or building campaigns;
endowment funds or campaigns; general operating expenses; education
product development; equipment acquisition, except as a small or
incidental part of a larger program; scholarships, financial aid, and
scholarship funds; single discipline curricula, unrelated to
comprehensive school reform; individual study, research or travel grants;
charitable dinners or fund-raising events; programs that are primarily
recreational; or programs that have an impact outside of our nine
southeastern states. Please note that the Foundation's current interests
and grant guidelines are in effect through the year 2000.
