LA 318 (Landscape Architecture) Applications of GIS in Natural Resources (co-listed as FNR 318 Forestry and Natural Resource Management) 2 units Arc/Info t Geographic Information Systems (GIS) computer software to explore relevant environmental issues utilizing natural resources data such as vegetation, soils, habitats, topography and geology. Develop data base, use software, and apply to relevant,natural systems.
LA 410 Information Systems in Landscape Architecture 2 units GIS applications using current software on advanced work stateions. Basic GIS concepts including topological data structures, relational database concepts, data input techniques and issues and spatial analysis techniques.
Cal Poly has acquired a site license for Arc/Info. GIS as a concept is covered in a survey class on Computer Applications in Biology. As the teaching laboratories and classrooms that we use are added to the campus network, we anticipate incoporation of Arc/Info as a tool into a wide variety of classes such as Ecology, Plant Ecology, and Resource Survey.
Cal Poly has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with San Luis Obispo County in which Cal Poly provides access to and support for County GIS users of ArcInfo as an environment for exploration, experimentation, and application of GIS and to identify ways in which the County and Cal Poly can work on cooprerative projects.
San Luis Obispo County Information Systems, Cal Poly, and the San Luis Obispo Economic Advisory Committee are hosted a meeting on July 17, 1996 to expore the possiblities for forming a countywide GIS Consortium.
