ABSTRACT

The Klamath Basin Virtual GIS Data Facility ("GIS Facility") has been established at Humboldt State University in support of the Klamath Basin Ecosystem Restoration Office's (ERO) mission of holistic resource management for the President's Forest Plan, "Klamath Province" (10.6 million acres) and the congressionally-defined Klamath Economic Zone (19.7 million acres). The ERO mission requires integrated, co-registered, and seamless GIS data layers covering political and administrative boundaries; lithospheric, hydrographic and atmospheric elements; plant and animal community characteristics, socioeconomic components, and descriptive landscape statistics including temporal dimensions. We report on one aspect of the vegetation mapping phase of the project in this paper. Summer, 1994 Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery was classified using hybrid clustering techniques to produce maps of existing vegetation in two key watersheds in the Klamath hydro-basin. The vegetation maps were overlaid with 90-meter buffer zones defined from stream vectors to assess near-stream conditions in the Shasta and Scott river sub-basins. The shade producing potential of near-stream vegetation cover was evaluated using area summaries by vegetation type. Our analysis suggests that riparian vegetation restoration is of even greater urgency in the Shasta than in the Scott; a conclusion confirmed by field inventory.

Subject: Certificate of Study in GIS & Remote Sensing
__________________________________________________________________________

The enclosed information sheet represents the 1996-97 version of the
Certificate of Study in GIS and Remote Sensing with all course numbers
consistent with the 96-97 Catalog. Content has not been modified, only
course numbers and titles have changed to reflect the current catalog.

Students apply for the certificate at Admissions and Records and are
encouraged to do so during the semester before the semester in which they
graduate. This to allow any problems with transcript evaluation to be
cleared up before they leave town.

Please also encourage students, who plan to earn the Certificate, to send an
email message to me (lf1@axe.humboldt.edu) so that I can keep a log of the
amount of interest in this Certificate. Based on the email activity of last
year, we now have about 20 students pursuing the Certificate.

HUMBOLDT STATE UNIVERSITY
CERTIFICATE OF STUDY

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS
AND REMOTE SENSING

The Certificate of Study in Geographic Information Systems and Remote
Sensing prepares students to apply the technologies of computerized
geographic information systems (GIS), and multispectral remote sensing
including digital image processing, to various disciplines. The program is
intended to focus and document training in GIS, remote sensing and related
technologies.

The following courses are required for the certificate:
