Digital Trails Education Program

Digital Trails (DT) is a BASIC-sponsored project designed to create a unified source of information about the public use trails in the ten county San Francisco Bay Area. Through the BASIC web site the project makes available digital trail maps using GIS, GPS, and BADGER technologies. Consistent with BASIC's Geographic Information Technology Education Program (GITEP), a DT educational program is underway to foster teacher, student, and volunteer skill in applying these technologies relative to Area land trails.

The DT educational program incorporates the following significant elements.

  1. Coordination with schools on curricula--K-12, Community College, Vocational/Technical, University.
  2. Teaming with profit and non-profit, public and private organizations to obtain joint grant and contract awards.
  3. Needs assessment, custom courseware development, curriculum evaluation, and consulting on digital mapping technology interests and issues.
  4. Training in the use of DT program resources and on geographic data collection, processing equipment, and analysis.
  5. Participation in DT's Venture Day, June 1, 1997, which is as well National Trails Day. Venture Day, showcases the whole of the DT project through hands-on and trail-site experiences made possible by numerous cooperating organizations.
