My name is Holly Dodson and I am an alumna of UCSB's Geology Department. I actually TAed Frank Davis' Biogeography class in the Geography Department when I was a student at UCSB.
I am working on a project here at UCSD called Visualizing Earth. The PI's are Sally Ride (UCSD), Eric Frost (SDSU), and Randy Souviney (UCSD) and we too are incorporating GIS into the middle and high schools. We have a crew of Penn State geographers and cognitive psychologists on board, Alan MacEachren, Roger Downs, and Lynn Liben to name a few. We are fortunate to have Stewart Nixon, who wrote ER Mapper and owns the company, working with us. We also use ArcView and VistaPro, and are examining other software for use. I'll include our URL so you can see better what we're up to. We are also working with Sally Ride's EarthRise and KidSat groups. Right now I am working with a number of middle and high school teachers and one elementary school, developing GIS curricula, some of which is web based. I think the NCGIA symposium would be a great place to make connections, learn a lot about what others are doing, and I need to go to the MIL anyways to look at the LandSat 3 for the Aral region. Thanks, I appreciate your assistance!
