Cabrillo College

Cabrillo College GIS courses are offered under the Archaeology Technology Program as vocational courses. We have curriculum approved for four courses. 1) Intro to GIS (conceptual, no computer use) was first taught Spring 1996 and at this point planned for each semester. 2) Intro to PC ArcInfo is to be taught Fall 1996 and as demand requires. 3) Intro to ArcView is planned for Spring 1997 and then as demand requires. 4) GIS and Archaeology is projected for Fall 1997.

Our students are typical of Community College. Many have B.A.s before they return to us to gain job related skills. Most are either interested in Archaeology or environmental planning. Currently the courses are optional for the Arch. Tech. Degree. We are hoping to see a new "GIS Tech." Program grow from a mix of Geography and these Arch. Tech. courses which will be cross listed in the future. As indicated the first course is conceptual, the next two courses are applications related and the fourth one is a applied use involving locations of cultural resourses on USGS base maps. We are currently building our web page at http://www.Cabrillo.CC.CA.US./cwis/Cabrillo.HTML. The Arch. Tech. Program is currently up but the GIS page is being constructed.
