About the author

Oliver Günther received his Diplom in Industrial Engineering from the University of Karlsruhe in 1984, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from U.C. Berkeley in 1985 and 1987, respectively. Between 1988 and 1993, he held research and teaching positions at ICSI in Berkeley, at U.C. Santa Barbara, and at FAW, a computer science research laboratory in Ulm, Germany. Since 1993, he has been Professor and Director of the Institute of Information Systems at Humboldt University in Berlin. Since 1996, he has also been Chair of the Berlin-Brandenburg Graduate Program in Distributed Information Systems.

Professor Günther has published widely in the areas of database management, knowledge-based systems, geographic and environmental information systems, as well as distributed information management. His most recent book, ``Environmental Information Systems,'' will be published by Springer-Verlag in early 1998. He was one of the founders of the SSD symposium series on spatial databases, and he serves as a consultant to government and industry on issues relating to environmental data management. Professor Günther held visiting faculty positions at the University of Cape Town, at U.C. Berkeley, and the École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications in Paris.
