Legend Design

An often-overlooked aspect of any good display design is the usability of the legend. From a graphic design standpoint, items in the legend should appear as similar as possible to the icons to which they refer, in size, shape, color, texture, and all other visual variables which apply. The legend should be compact and well organized; in general, area features are grouped together, as are line and point features. Annotations such as the title, date, creator, affiliation, and source materials should all be included in the legend, which should be self-contained and large enough to fully explain the icons on the display.
